Personality and short background:
Berwald often leaves bad first impressions, often due to his intimidating feel that he gives off. It also doesn't help that he is, especially to new acquaintances, extremely silent. However, this is not because that he is un friendly, he simply prefers to keep his thoughts to himself. Despite this, he likes debates, and will participate if it holds his interest long enough. Though he usually doesn't take a specific side, he is open-minded and sees things from all corners before stating his opinion.
As for his past, He has served in the military for a time since a very young age, but decided to resign after he discovered that strict life of the military didn't suit him. At the time, he wanted to have his own way with things, and refused to follow or even listen to orders that didn't sit well with him. Now, he still asks himself whether he was simple going through a rebellious phase, and if he should join the military again.
Berwald as a child was also relatively reserved. But some say that he had more than his share of childhood trouble making. He was born in a town in the far north, and was raised there for a time until he enlisted himself into the military. He doesn't talk about his parents often, or rather no one got to know him long enough for him to mention them. Their current whereabouts are unknown, but Berwald assures anyone who asks him about them that they are still alive and he has contact with them every once in a while
Now, he works as a ship mechanic, simply living as a civilian until he finally makes a decision.

"Don't forget that i want it done by tommorrow morning!"
A short grunt was all Berwald gave as a reply as he turned his back away from the closing door. What did that guy think he is? Brain addled from sniffing coal fumes? He could remember what he's been told 10 minutes ago. Berwald shook his head and forced himself to calm down. He picked a wrench from the table and walked to the work bench. An engine, an old three twenty one, sat on it. He pushed a finger against his glasses, and put a hand on the cool metal.
His lips quirked downwards and he tightened his jaw, bending his knees to lean closer. Then he adjusted himself slightly to find a better perspective to look at the engine at. He repeated this several times, turning and unbolting several parts on the machine before his mouth twitches upwards slightly.
It was an old engine, and he couldn't blame it. Several years of work on a merchant ship going back and forth across continents have done far worse things. This one had been working a ship ferrying weapons and ammunition from Londonium to the eastern countries. Thus, given the conditions of its entire working life, the engine was still in good shape.
Though, this one will be back in his workshop after a few trips, even if he does fix it. Maybe it won't. Maybe it'll end up in one of the dumps, replaced by the faster and more reliable engines. Unfortunately everything has its time. This one's is coming to an end.
He gives the engine a light pat, straightens up and makes his way to the back room. He browses through the isles of shelves and drawers, peering into them then reaching in with his hand, rummaging and rattling through the contents. He feels the cold of metal on his fingers. Parts.
It doesn't take him long to find the ones that he needs, and he gathers them up in one arm and walks back to the work bench. Dropping them onto the table before turning around again. After a minute he returns with his tools.
He puts a hand on the engine and grabs a new piston and a spanner.
"Let's make ye good again,"
