He is also skilled in combat, his choice weapon being the katana. Because of his interest in learning new things, he is adaptable to most situations and is a fast learner. He is good at observing in the mood and body language of others while being guarded of his own true intentions.
Personality andshort background:
Kiku is a shy, quiet and diligent young man. He is not very expressive as he tends to keep his thoughts and feelings hidden. People initially view him as a serious and calm person upon the first meeting. However, once he gets to know a person better, he opens up more. He is a good listener and is mindful of what he says to people. This however, can be a great headache to others as they can’t tell what exactly he is feeling/thinking and it sometimes leads them to misunderstand him altogether.
Descended from a long line of nobility and religious priests, Kiku grew up within the Imperial Court and did not have much contact with the world outside of Court. His father is one of the Emperor’s samurai bodyguards and from his sire, Kiku learnt much about combat and thus developed an interest in weaponry. His mother, being the court musician and poet, taught him to appreciate the beauty in all things surrounding him. From her came his love for nature and the creative arts.
Despite being isolated from the outside world during much of his childhood, Kiku is certainly not unaware of occurrences beyond his land; his father made sure of that by encouraging him to listen /read whatever news that came their way either by a messenger or by print. Occasionally, his father would bring him along for the Court meetings and young Kiku would sit quietly by a corner, listening and absorbing with keen ears all that were discussed among the elders.
Although he was raised to conduct himself with grace and courtesy, Kiku is not immune to anger and the occasional snark, especially towards people he finds somewhat irritating, such as the sons of the diplomats and nobles of the other Asiatic nations. He does not hate them, but he does not like them that much either; every time the Chinese and the Korean diplomats pay visit to the Emperor and his Court, their children often tease him for his size and how he was “way too serious” and “acting like an old man”. He seldom loses his temper with them, preferring instead to be politely rude and cold. Sometimes it works to his advantage; when it doesn’t, he just sighs and puts up with getting groped by the Koreans or getting pushed and accidentally sat on by the Chinese.
When Kiku turned 17, he met a European for the first time. It was a young Dutch courier from Heta Empire who was carrying messages to China. From him, Kiku listened to stories about the bustling cities and wonders of Heta Empire, about the military and pirates and of the many different kinds of air ships he hasn’t heard of or seen before. His encounter with the Dutchman woke up the wanderlust in him. Around the same time, Kiku encountered yet another Westerner – this time, it was an American explorer, who managed to convince Kiku to take short ride in his glider. This incident with the American fuelled his curiosity further, and at his coming-of-age ceremony the year after, Kiku made the decision to travel to Heta Empire to learn and experience more about this exotic, new land.
With blessings from his family and the Emperor, Kiku Honda left home with only his father’s treasured katana, Kusanagi, and headed towards Heta Empire.

Kiku Honda woke up to the sound of a somewhat familiar droning hum. For a moment, he wondered where he was. He stared at the streaks of light entering his room from the bottom of the door, thinking hard.
Ah that’s right, he thought. He was on a merchant airship heading towards Heta Empire. He sat up and was immediately sorry because the next moment he felt a sharp stab of pain at the back of his eyes. At the same time he was aware of how heavy his head felt. He groaned, clutching his head with his hands, as memories of the day before washed over him.
Upon boarding the ship, he had found that sitting in an airship continuously for days with a... rather enthusiastic captain at the helm did not sit well at all with his stomach. He had thought the American explorer was a daredevil with the glider, flying at speeds that it shouldn’t even be possible for a vehicle that size. The Italian captain he was flying with now proved how wrong he was while they encountered a thunderstorm yesterday. Apparently the best way to fly during a storm was to fly directly through the storm cloud. At breakneck speed.
“Speed is a captain’s best friend, ve~!” was the last thing Kiku heard before the captain nosedived into the ominous dark, thundering cloud.
He had spent most of the nosedive hanging onto the dear life and seeing his life flash before him, thinking how terrible it was to die even before getting a taste of pasta and wurst. By some miracle however, they managed to survive the storm all in one piece. With the loom of death of out his mind, and the airship flying horizontally again, Kiku became preoccupied by something else: his churning stomach. And thus he spent the latter half of the day feeling like he could throw up any moment.
Kiku shuddered, thinking about it now. He still felt a little air-sick but at least now he didn’t feel like he had to empty his stomach.... not that it wasn’t already empty. He moved tentatively, taking care to stand up slowly and not move his head too much. Slipping on his jacket to keep out the cold of dawn, he made sure Kusanagi was fastened safely to his belt and proceeded to make his way up to the ship deck.
The fresh, crisp morning air was refreshing; Kiku immediately felt better. He said hello to a few of the crew who were already busying themselves with work on the deck, and walked towards the side of the ship. He glanced out over the skies, feeling the wind ruffle his raven-black hair as he looked ahead. He felt his breath catch at the view: at the not-so-far-distance, he could see a vast land filled with huge buildings, all manner of gliders, planes and airships circling around in the sky directly above it. Clouds of steam trailed upwards from the cities, coloured pink and orangey by the rising sun. It was as if the land itself was alive and breathing.
Kiku could only look on in awe, his usually stoic face now flushed with eagerness and excitement. He heard a soft chuckle behind him, and he turned.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” It was the Italian captain.
“Yes,” he said softly, turning back to gaze at the buildings.
They continued watching in silence as the ship steadily made its way closer to Heta Empire.
