After the Recolutionary War in the American free states, they proposed and dopted the Articles of Confederation. There were major difficulties at first, but after revising and strengthening the Articles and agreeing to the set up of a National bank and fair tarrifs and taxes that would allow the federal government ot pay back their war debts, the States flourished.
Each State had almost complete control over what went on in their state, but they cooperated together to make sure enough things were similar that they could function on a whole. Still, almost all issues were decided by the states.
Slavery was still legal all over the country except in a few Northern states that had banned it. But without the invention of the Cotton Gin, Slavery became unpopular and too costly. Around the time of Third Great Awakening, a Religious Movement that took Spirituality to a more accepting and civil-minded level, it was outlawed in all states. Blacks don't enjoy the civil-liberties they do now and are still segregated and discriminated against, but they are much better off than after the Civil war in our timeline.
Because there was no civil war and reconstruction era, the South flourished. They were large agriculture producers with a heavy agrarian economy. The North did just as well in the areas of steam technology and Airship building in New England shoveled tons of money into the economy. With the South also Flourishing with the absence of the decimation and descrimination of the Civil War/Recontruction period, the country rose as an economic and Industrial power.
Meanwhile, they were expanding West, settling lands they had aquired from Mexico, Spain, and France. In teh West the timeline advances much the same as in the OT, minus bleeding Kansas and other events linked it the Civil War. The Gold Rush, the Age of the Cowboy, all of that is still in there.
