Personality and short background:
Yao was born to a family of distinguished merchants in the Asiatic Council. He was the eldest of his siblings, therefore pushed to be an overachiever and the best of the best. At home he would strive tirelessly to be a role model for his younger siblings, and at school he aimed for the top of the class. When his father went on those annual trips across the sea, he'd always beg to be taken along. Sometimes he was allowed to, but most of the time, he wasn't.
There wasn't much time for fun in his childhood, although that may have something to do with the fact that he was teased mercilessly by other kids for a certain speech tic and his girly looks. He ignored them the best he could though, and reminded himself he had a higher purpose in life. It was through much hard work and his collection of Shinatty Dolls that he was finally able to overcome his stupid speech tic. Nowadays, it only slips out when he's extremely tired or pumped up.
His father eventually died a mysterious death overseas and he succeeded the family business and ship. Yao was thrilled to finally escape his hometown and enter the business. They transported rare vegetation and medicinal herbs, but he wanted to expand. Foreign artifacts, ancient pottery and bolts of the finest silk- he was dead set on being the greatest merchant the world ever knew. After all, more profit meant more money, and more money meant more shinatty do- er, a better life.
Eventually, a rumour spread. Opium could be traded for, that is, if you knew the right price and the right merchant. The black market was a type of market after all.
Yao is known to be somewhere between modest and overbearing. He's a polite enough person who knows his manners and is all for formalities, but when it comes down to it, if there's something about you he doesn't like, he make sure you know of it by the end of the day. He can be easily annoying with his naggy, superior-like attitude but he doesn't mean any harm. Just that you shouldn't slouch when you're eating and stop clicking your tongue- it's rude! His arrogant manner only makes him all the more like a grumpy-old-man-who-lives-across-the-street. Not that he's old, just old-fashioned. He's certainly in denial of not being hip, young and cool in any case.
Other: He's a wee bit racist in that he feels the East is far superior to the west, but he still likes to travel and see the different countries.
Being the old fogey he is, all the new technology and innovations confuse him beyond belief. He'll pretend to show interest just to be polite and 'with the times', but he really couldn't care less.
His Shinatty collection is his most prized possession. If anyone touches it, he will track them down and poke a thousand needles into them where the light don't shine.
RP sample:
Yao scanned the entire docks from beside his airship. It had been a while since he stopped by Londinium. In fact, it had been so long, he wondered if he could still find his way around. Lifting up his pack full of supplies, he reassured himself mentally. He would never know until he tried!
There were some parts to the town that looked like they'd never change, and other parts that he had to look twice to make sure he was in the right place. The large mobs of people on the roads had seemed daunting at first, but it was impossible to get around just scooting around the gutters. One hand securely on his pack, because if he remembered right, this town was always swarming with thieving rats, he navigated his way through the steadily growing crowds. After weeks on a ship, he'd forgotten how taxing it was to be surrounded by people all around. It wasn't till much squeezing and pushing later that he managed to find a mostly empty spot to catch his breath. He had a good feeling he was still nowhere near the destination he was going for though. It didn't help that he could still see the tops of the airships from where he was.
Lips pursed in annoyance, he moved his pack to a more comfortable position and straightened up, ready to enter the crowds once more. He was here on business, and it wouldn't do to be late. First impressions were everything in the trading world, or so Yao had learned when he was younger. The fortune he'd done this morning had promised good winds too- and he'd done it twice to be sure. Although at the rate he was going, he wouldn't be able to even reach the edge of the market in time. He wasn't even sure where he was now!
Swallowing his pride, he stopped the nearest person and through clenched teeth, asked,
"Excuse me, but could you point me in the direction of the market?"
Business was business, and he sure wasn't about to let someone else take the first-edition Shinatty Doll he heard was in town.
